The European Union’s Energy-related Products (ErP) Directive is part of a larger initiative to improve building efficiency. The regulations apply to several products, including water pumps and circulation pumps for HVAC.
A central feature of building design in the EU and across the world is energy efficiency. Green buildings have become more of a standard and energy efficiency is important for earning green building certification. EU governments have rigorous standards of efficiency under the Energy Products Directive. Only products that meet these requirements may carry the Conformity Européenne (CE) mark and be sold within the EU.
To become the world's most climate-friendly region and thus get energy security, green jobs and competitiveness for European companies in important sectors in the future economy is one of the EU's goals. The specific goal is to reduce energy consumption by 12 per cent from the 2007 consumption level. This means a saving of 341 terawatt hours (trillion watts) or 341 billion kilowatt hours.
ENERGY EFFICIENCY INDEX (EEI)
EEI specifies how much the power of a pump is below one predefined reference power source. In building design, energy efficiency has come to the forefront. Products that can deliver the desired effect with lower electrical energy will save money and reduce emissions. In accordance with the ErP directives, manufacturers can help property owners and designers choose products that fit in with the application and that meet the efficiency requirements.
EEI specifies how much the pump's power input is below a predefined reference current source. The lower the EEI, the less energy the circulator uses. The most important thing to remember is that only the products that meet the EEI requirements in the ErP directive may be labelled with the Conformité Européenne mark (CE), which gives the product the authority to be sold within the EU.
Since 2014 all ESBE products containing a pump is upgraded according to EU EEI regulations.
